Whittier’s Poems by John G. Whittier | Butler Brothers | c. 1889
An attractive late nineteenth-century collection of poetry by American poet John Greenleaf Whittier, presented in an especially striking Victorian decorative binding.
Bound in reddish-brown publisher's cloth, the book features an elaborate black-stamped design of interlacing patterns and foliage across the front board and spine, accented with gilt lettering. The central floral decoration and intricate geometric ornament give the volume considerable shelf appeal and make the binding one of the highlights of this edition.
The book is undated, but surviving evidence allows its publication period to be narrowed considerably. Butler Brothers is identified on the title page as "Butler Brothers Incorporated," while an advertisement at the rear for the company's wind-up Fly Fan cites patent dates of June 30, 1885 and March 8, 1887. Most significantly, a contemporary ownership inscription on the front blank reads "Jeanie White, Abbeville, S.C., Dec. 1889," establishing that this copy was in circulation no later than December 1889. A publication date of circa 1888–1889 is therefore appropriate.
The contemporary Abbeville inscription provides a particularly nice piece of history. This copy was acquired at an estate sale at the same Abbeville, South Carolina property where the book had reportedly remained since the time of the 1889 inscription.
Condition: Good+ to Very Good. The decorative cloth remains remarkably attractive, with strong black stamping and surviving gilt. Moderate rubbing and wear are present at the corners and spine ends, including some fraying. The spine shows age-related fading. Interior pages have expected toning and scattered foxing, with a small closed tear at the upper edge of the title page. Contemporary ownership inscription dated December 1889.
