Uncle Tom's Cabin

Harriet Beecher Stowe

J. H. Sears & Company, Inc., New York

Kingsport Press, Kingsport, Tennessee

Undated, circa 1920s

A charming compact early 20th-century edition of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s landmark American novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, published in New York by J. H. Sears & Company and printed and bound by the Kingsport Press of Kingsport, Tennessee.

Measuring approximately 4¼ × 6½ inches, this small-format edition contains 244 pages and is bound in burgundy cloth with an elaborate architectural border and decorative central shield stamped to the front board. Although much of the original decoration has softened with age and use, enough remains to give the book a distinctly period appearance.

First published in 1852, Uncle Tom’s Cabin became one of the most influential and widely read American novels of the nineteenth century. This later Sears edition represents the continued popularity of Stowe’s work well into the early decades of the twentieth century and makes an affordable period example for a collection of American literature.
