Travels With Charlie
John Steinbeck – Travels with Charley: In Search of America
Viking Press, 1962 – Fifth Printing
John Steinbeck’s beloved account of his journey across America with his French poodle, Charley. Traveling in a specially outfitted camper he named Rocinante, Steinbeck set out to rediscover the country and its people, producing one of the most enduring American travel narratives of the twentieth century.
Published by The Viking Press in 1962, this copy is the fifth printing, November 1962, making it an early printing from the book’s original year of publication. It retains the wonderfully illustrated original Viking dust jacket designed by Don Freeman, including the illustrated map across the endpapers.
The blue cloth-bound book itself is in very good condition, with a clean, attractive interior and sound binding. The original dust jacket shows considerable age and use, with chipping, tears, edge loss, rubbing, and general wear, as shown in the photographs. Despite its condition, the survival of the original jacket adds considerably to the character and appeal of this early copy.
A handsome and affordable early edition of one of Steinbeck’s best-known later works, particularly appealing to collectors of American literature, travel writing, and Steinbeck.
