The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith
A vintage 1965 Washington Square Press edition of Oliver Goldsmith's enduring eighteenth century novel The Vicar of Wakefield. First published in 1766, Goldsmith's story of the Reverend Dr. Primrose and his family combines domestic comedy, satire, misfortune, and social observation.
This copy is the fifth Washington Square Press printing, issued in March 1965, as stated on the copyright page. The Washington Square Press edition was first printed in November 1956 and includes an introduction by Ernest Brennecke.
Particularly appealing is the distinctly mid century wrapper design, featuring a stylized illustration of the Primrose family in black, green, yellow, and blue. The original 45¢ price and W 254 publisher number remain printed at the upper corner. The rear wrapper continues the period design with a repeating Washington Square Press logo pattern.
Condition: Good+ vintage condition. The wrappers show general handling wear, rubbing, soiling, edge wear, and wear along the spine and corners. Noticeable age toning and discoloration are present, particularly to the rear wrapper and pages. The cover colors and illustration remain attractive.
