The Throne of Saturn by S. Fowler Wright
A particularly well-preserved first edition of S. Fowler Wright’s The Throne of Saturn, published by Arkham House in 1949 and retaining its striking original dust jacket designed by Ronald Clyne.
This collection brings together Wright’s science fiction and fantastic short stories, including The Rat, Automata, Brain, Original Sin, and the title story. Published during the early years of Arkham House, the volume was issued in a relatively small printing of approximately 3,000 copies.
The original Ronald Clyne dust jacket is a highlight of this copy. Clyne’s distinctive jacket designs became closely associated with the visual identity of Arkham House, and surviving examples in this level of preservation are especially desirable. The jacket retains the original $3.00 publisher’s price on the front flap and shows only very minor evidence of age and handling.
The book itself is in Fine+ condition. The black cloth boards and gilt spine lettering are exceptionally well preserved, the binding is firm, and the interior is remarkably clean and fresh. Pages are clean and unmarked, with no writing or ownership markings noted.
An excellent collector’s copy of an early Arkham House science fiction title, particularly appealing for the combination of its first edition status, outstanding interior condition, and unusually well-preserved Ronald Clyne jacket.
