Rachel Cade by Charles Mercer

Published in 1956, Charles Mercer’s Rachel Cade is a dramatic mid-century novel set against the landscape of the Belgian Congo and the Ruwenzori Mountains. The story follows Rachel Cade, an independent American woman who travels to a remote African village to provide medical care and education, encountering cultural conflict, danger, and unexpected relationships along the way.

Mercer drew inspiration for the novel from his own travels through Central and West Africa as a reporter. On the rear dust-jacket panel, he describes visiting the Ruwenzori—the legendary “Mountains of the Moon”—and how the landscape and people he encountered helped inspire Rachel’s story.

The novel was later adapted by Warner Bros. as the 1961 film The Sins of Rachel Cade, starring Angie Dickinson, Peter Finch, and Roger Moore.
