On Christmas Day in the Morning
A wonderfully atmospheric early twentieth-century Christmas book, On Christmas Day in the Morning by Grace S. Richmond is a short holiday tale of family, homecoming, and the warmth of Christmas morning.
Published in New York by A. L. Burt Company, this undated early reprint carries the original 1905 and 1908 copyright notices and is illustrated by Charles M. Relyea. The book is especially appealing for its period design, with decorative green ornamentation throughout and a charming pictorial binding showing Christmas presents gathered beneath a snow-covered window.
Most notably, this copy retains its original illustrated dust jacket, repeating the festive window scene from the binding. Early dust jackets were often discarded, making their survival an especially desirable feature in decorative books of this period.
Complete with All Four Color Illustrations
This copy is complete with all four illustrations called for in the book's illustration list, including the color frontispiece and three additional full-page color plates by Charles M. Relyea.
The illustrations depict scenes from the Christmas story and remain remarkably attractive, with warm period coloring that beautifully complements the book's holiday character.
Original Hochschild Kohn & Co. Bookseller Label
An additional piece of period history survives inside: the rear pastedown bears the small original Hochschild Kohn & Co. “BOOKS” bookseller label.
Hochschild Kohn & Co. was a prominent Baltimore department store, and the surviving label provides an appealing glimpse into the book's early retail history. Rather than being removed, the label has been left exactly as found as part of the book's history.
