First English edition of Robert Louis Stevenson's In the South Seas, published by Chatto & Windus in London in 1900.
Published posthumously, In the South Seas brings together Stevenson's writings and observations from his travels through the Pacific, including the Marquesas, Paumotus and Gilbert Islands.
Stevenson and his family began their Pacific travels in 1888, eventually settling in Samoa, where he spent the final years of his life.
This copy remains in its original black publisher's cloth with gilt lettering and decorative rules to the spine. The gilt remains notably bright and attractive. Boards show light rubbing and age-related wear, particularly around the spine ends and extremities. The untrimmed page edges are preserved.
The interior is clean and well preserved overall, with expected light age toning and occasional spotting. Binding remains sound.
