Audubon's Birds of America

A handsome 1950 first printing of the Macmillan Popular Edition of John James Audubon’s Birds of America, featuring an introduction and descriptive captions by noted American ornithologist Ludlow Griscom.

Created to bring Audubon’s celebrated bird paintings to a wider audience, this substantial volume reproduces 288 of Audubon’s bird illustrations in color, accompanied by descriptive text.

Audubon’s original Birds of America remains one of the great achievements of American natural-history illustration, and this mid-century edition offers an accessible and attractive presentation of his work.

This copy is especially appealing for its decorative binding, with feather-patterned paper-covered boards, green cloth spine, black title panel, and gilt lettering and ornamentation. The copyright page expressly states “First Printing.”

A previous owner’s name, Columbia address, and date of May 23, 1950 are written on the front endpaper, providing a period ownership record dating from the year of publication.

Condition

Very Good vintage condition. Binding remains attractive with light rubbing and shelf wear, including minor wear to the corners and spine ends. Gilt spine lettering remains bright and legible. Interior is generally clean with expected light age toning. Previous owner’s inscription and May 23, 1950 date appear on the front endpaper. No dust jacket.
