A particularly lovely Canadian copy of Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery, made especially appealing by a wonderful piece of Prince Edward Island provenance.

This vintage McGraw Hill Ryerson hardcover bears the original green stamp:

“Purchased at Green Gables Cavendish, P.E.I.”

The stamp documents that this copy was purchased at Green Gables in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, giving it a direct and fitting connection to the landscape and place forever associated with Montgomery's beloved novel.

Published in Canada by McGraw Hill Ryerson Limited, this later Canadian printing retains the copyright statement “First Canadian Edition, April, 1942.” It should not be confused with the actual 1942 first Canadian printing. This later issue carries SBN 7700 0006 1 and the production code “30 JD 0987.” We have conservatively dated the copy to approximately the 1970s.

The book is illustrated by noted Canadian artist Hilton Hassell, O.S.A., with numerous charming black and gray illustrations throughout. Among them are some of the novel's most memorable scenes, including Gilbert's famous cry of “Carrots! Carrots!”

Bound in bright yellow cloth with the title and author printed along the spine, this is an exceptionally attractive copy. The boards remain remarkably bright and clean, with only minor signs of handling and light wear at the spine ends. The binding is firm and the interior is exceptionally clean and bright. Please see photographs for the best representation of condition.
