A handsome two-volume limited edition of Alexandre Dumas’s Ange Pitou; or, Taking the Bastile, published in Boston by Dana Estes & Company as part of the Edition de Médicis. This deluxe edition was limited to 1,000 numbered copies, with this set being No. 142.

Both volumes are bound in matching three-quarter red morocco by Brentano’s of New York, with the Brentano’s binder’s mark present. The bindings feature raised spine bands, extensive gilt decoration, fleur-de-lis devices, and red cloth boards. The combination of the numbered Edition de Médicis and signed Brentano’s bindings makes this an especially attractive example of Dumas in a period decorative binding.

The books are illustrated with photogravures and other plates, with all illustrations called for in both volumes present. The interiors are notably clean and well preserved, and the plates retain excellent detail.

Condition: Good to Very Good overall. The leather shows age-related rubbing and wear, particularly at the joints, spine ends, and raised bands, with some loss to the gilt. The cloth boards show light fading and handling wear. A previous hinge/joint repair was professionally performed and is stable. In Volume I, the preliminary leaf bearing the Ange Pitou — Volume I title is detached but present and laid in. Please see photographs for the binding condition. Internally, both volumes remain quite clean and complete, including all listed illustrations.
